Didn’t I?
I did. 5 speed, 5 cylinder, tuned, turbo wagon. Interior swap with an 850r , as well as a few other bits. Wheels from a much newer s60. Hatch full of extra parts. The interior is not perfect, but it’s veeeeery nice. Exterior is a bit more banged up, but still presentable. Mechanically there are some minor issues, but none of them affect driveability. I’m out $2300. Paid more for the beat-to-shit salvage-titled Miata.
I’m in love.

$2,300?!?!?? How do you people find these deals...

I've spent hours a day checking Craigslist for the past few months, and STILL had people buy cars out from under me. Feels good to finally get one I want

Fuck yeah!

It’s surprisingly fast too, for what it is. I was not expecting to be pinned to the seat when the boost hit in second gear. B ro in a G35 sedan tried to pass and could not keep up haha

You should get a “diesel” badge for it.

Hmm... I bet I could find a diesel Mercedes badge at pick-n-pull

Poor Miata waits so long for a turbo and I bring home a factory turbo'd car.

Also thanks to your acquisition, my fastest car is now the slowest car compared to all PNW Oppo’s top cars...

Nice! That interior is from an 850R, not a V70R.
Now you just need to get it to stage zero, as Volvo people like to say. Swap out all the fluids, etc. Also take a look at all the hoses leading to the turbo as they get get bad or pop off leading to less boost. The TCV is another quick and easy fix (though about $60) which can really help. The next thing would be to get a boost gauge and run it temporarily so you can see when the boost comes in. You can adjust it by shortening or lengthening the wastegate rod. It should start pulling hard at about 2400ish rpms and it should want to pull the wheel hard in one direction. The torque steer is real. Another thing to listen for is flutter when you let off the gas which indicates the compressor bypass valve is torn. The CBV can be replaced in the car with ample swear words and patience.
The next thing that is a nice addition is a Snabb turbo inlet pipe. Larger diameter without any restrictions to the turbo. Makes for nice noises. The stock air box is good up to about 350hp, so unless you like a ton of annoying turbo noises there is no need for a CAI.
A 3" downpipe and a tune will yield silly results. Watching the face of some bro in a BMW or Camaro as you drop it in 3rd gear and drag his ass down the highway is one of life’s great pleasures.
Congrats on the car, they are wonderful and fun. Do a few oil changes with fun synthetic and then beat on it.

It's WA, so it'll only cost you another $700!

I was a bit disappointed he didn’t put in “$1.00 ” as the sale price...
I am curious to see how it compares with the Miata's $120ish a month insurance. Hopefully less.

The $1.00 thing doesn’t work anymore. They go by whatever BS book value. Ask me how I know!

Also likely
![]() 10/20/2018 at 22:01 |

Yes! Fairly common, although most people go turbo. Probably a 1 to 6 ratio when it comes to forced induction. There's not a lot of headroom in our little engines even with a blower

Ya done good, I’d say. Those V70s/850s
are fantastic. What year is it?
![]() 10/20/2018 at 22:35 |

Yeah, I think I’ve firmly entrenched myself in the Volvo enthusiast lifestyle. I absolutely love this thing. It’s a 95 850
![]() 10/20/2018 at 22:43 |

They’re tanks, and easy to work on if things go wrong. Might be a Halifax car, they used to assemble the 850/940s. Dad of a friend of mine was a manager at the plant, and we’d sometimes end up cruising in his T-5R
.
It was batshit crazy, I’m surprised we didn’t get into trouble with it.

The winter get rid of it sales are starting. It’s killing me to stand by and watch, but if I buy anything before I get that mistake of Helix fixed and sold first , my wife will beat me to death with my own shoes.

Matter of fact I had about a million different electrical issues—all intermittent—that I just traced to a finicky starter. Headlights, fan, AC, and a few other electrical systems. Not sure if I should be happy about how easy it was to diagnose, or worried that my first night of ownership gives me electrical gremlins...
T-5R would certainly work, but at some point 8 need to get a P2 v70r. And a P1. And a 240. And a new V90. And.....
![]() 10/21/2018 at 02:11 |
|
P1 v70r has the quilted seats right?
It’s not a crazy high-boost build by any means, but it’s definitely not stock either. I think a few of the above items have been taken care of already. I actually didn’t notice any torque steer driving it home, but I only did pulls in 4th and 5th on the highway. For having 17" s60 wheels, IPD sway bars and lowering springs, the ride is surprisingly comfy.
I feel like I’ll be bugging you often for Volvo expertise! I’ve got a box full of parts, half of which are completely foreign to me. Oh... Found the ad text. Anything in here raising alarm bells?

If you’re looking for one, I am selling my 1998 V70 T5 Manual. Details here:

The only thing that jumps out at me is how good a deal it sounds like you got. Sounds like everything is there and all the hard/annoying stuff has been done. Search for the “glove test” for these cars to check the PCV - it says it’s been done but there are two ways to do it, one right and one only half right . If it’s clogged you will blow the crank seals and leak oil. It’s not a hard fix, just takes a bit of time.
Get a tune. You can add 50hp and 50 torques with your setup. It will feel like you added a lot more.
And drive the piss out of it. I’m really jealous. My username is Seaway on swedespeed.com if you have any questions. That’s a very good resource usually.

I wouldn’t worry. Once an old Volvo is dialed in they are good for a long time with basic maintenance.
Haha yeah, they are all quirky in a fun way. 940 turbo or SE
wagon for me please... I like the classics.

The boost is hilariously fun, and the car just feels so luxurious. I can’t believe a ‘95 had side impact airbags, seat heaters, duel-zone automatic climate control, etc. The gearbox and clutch are technically pretty awful by Miata standards—tons of slop, rubbery shifter, tall and vague clutch feel— but they fit the wagon’ s character so well. Steering feel is pretty numb too, but throttle modulates quite nicely, and the wagon corners like you wouldn’t believe. I will make it down there sooner rather than later and you’ve got dibs on first drive!

I can't wait!

This is basically exactly how I feel about my 1995 E34 compared with my Z3 coupe. Five series is so different in a lot of ways but it perfectly fits and its modern enough that I never really feel like I’m in somewhat of a deathtrap
![]() 10/31/2018 at 22:15 |

Wait, the Miata is a salvage title? Bold of you to pull the passenger out to throw and amp in there, then.
![]() 10/31/2018 at 22:25 |
|
Yep. Front end collision years before I bought it. Didn’t seem to do much damage, but it doesn’t take much to total a Miata. Anyways, the a irbag sensors were all non-functioning when I pulled them. I’ve put my faith in Schroth’s street-oriented 6-point harness, t he half-ish cage and good FIA-certified seats. Seemed like the better choice, especially with all the offroad time the Miata sees.
![]() 10/31/2018 at 23:57 |
|
Fair enough. Was there any reinforcement done to the A pillars? Or is the stock internal support good enough to protect you in a rollover?
![]() 11/01/2018 at 00:41 |
|
Stock is supposedly good enough for rollover support. I've heard that they were built to withstand more than enough weight to not crumple. That said, depending on how things go in the next year or so, I might try to add to the existing bars. At the very least, I'd like door bars
